OK, got it!
I have a functional bootable cd that loads a modified anaconda. It forces 
the install to text mode, since I haven't included xservers in the disk 
images. The install options screen gives you 2 options, 'low mem' or 'low 
mem laptop' :)
It still needs some work, of course, but it is working.
