I just had a look at the documentation on the Red Hat site, and the closest
to what I'm doing is the install using PLIP. Unfortunately, my laptop has no
parallel port so I can't use PLIP.

I have set up a PPP link over a serial line before (following the
instructions in the "Serial Laplink Howto") to network 2 computers so I know
PPP works. It seems there is other software that could do the job, I'm
looking into it now.
