| Just out of curiosity, how much of this depends from the fact that,
| presumably, you already have all KDE running? I ask because here,

I think we should discuss *memory usage* and *startup time* separatly.
It seems to me that 25-30 (typical) windows with Konqueror is exactly limit of
128MB of memory on my computer.
On the other side, startup time depends on many factors, and one of those is
... number of fonts insatlled.
Yes, really: check how many fonts do you have installed.
For typical Linux install (like Mandrake 8.2) with WinFonts installed (from
Win98/2000), you will get around 1000 (scalable) fonts.
I found that every 300 fonts (in typical KDE install) delay startup time of
Konqueror (and of any other KDE applications) by 1 sec.!
So, reducing number of installed fonts from 1000 to, say, 100 you reduce
startup time by about 3 sec.!

This problem (I think) was eliminated with FontConfig and Qt 3.1/KDE 3.1
I am currently rebuilding Qt 3.1 to check wether it's really so.
FontConfig stores "font cache" for all directories with fonts, so there is no
need to rescan fonts on startup.

| without Gnome running all time, Galeon, which is said to be a "fast"
| browser" takes much more than Mozilla to start, when I feel like
| trying it.

I think Galeon2 (for GNOME2) would be much better than Galeon for GNOME1.
And Phoenix looks like very promising.
I haven't tested those browsers, though.
(Konqueror perfectly fits my needs, and it's pretty stable, IMO)
