Ok, how about one more test?

I'm guessing that for whatever reason, the TinyX servers won't work with 
this machine's main board.

How about trying slinky with TinyX, but....
Delete and recreate the X link, so that it points to the normal Xserver 
(XFree86).  Run redhat-config-xfree86 to set it up.

I've no idea about the package dependencies, and what other packages might 
be needed, but it should be close. In the latest release, I did add some 
packages to the XFree package set.
