I don't know the answer to your question, but if you are just trying to 
boot the installer, why not use a boot floppy?

Here are the disk related boot messages I see on a couple of different 
machines, in case that helps:

The stock Red Hat release won't fit on that drive. The rule install 
probably will, but it will be a tight fit.
