What type of processor does this machine have? Is there a kernel package 
suitable for this processor available in the RPM directory?

It sounds as if you may be getting NFS timeouts. I've had difficulty 
installing via NFS myself, larger packages (kernel, glibc, etc.) seem to 
fail on a regular basis.

You might try doing an http or ftp install.
