    Hi Jim :)

I don't know about it, but you may be interested in PAWM (a
lightweight window manager that I wrote together with a friend. He is
maintaining it actively now), It's GPL, has little memory footprint,
and it's very fast (and can be configured to be even faster).

If you want, go to http://www.pleyades.net/pawm and download it.
A new release is coming soon, if you don't bother to wait.

I understand you. You don't need to configure PAWM at first, it
will work OK with its default config, but it is very configurable. I
don't want to 'sell' you PAWM, just if you want to give it a try,
both David (the current maintainer) and me we are open to
suggestions.

    Hope this helps...
