Hello,
if you are looking for a Linux desktop system, also consider using  
Xubuntu - it works fine out of the box, can be installed debian-like  
from CD or over bootp (tfpt, dhcp, aka as netinstall) and is up to  
date. It uses XFCE, so you have no Gnome/KDE bloat on your systems.  
My experiences schow, that you can use it on systems with 64 to 128  
MB of RAM.
