I prefer the standard tree, using
/src
    /installer
    /whatever else
/docs
     /installer
     /general (or /RULE or something like that)
     /whatever else
This would be easier to expand if additional code like custom
programs/RPMs, post-install scripts etc. are comming in.

I'm not sure if /contrib is needed, but I can live with an empty
directory.

Therefore I prefer the standard approch, it's widely used and proven
useful. Also additional directories can (and must!) be added if
necessary. It's a Bad Idea (TM) to try squishing everything into an
existing structure. Structures need to grow and expand with the needs of
the project.
