Hi,
We need a menu that installs with rule and installs in user space
when users are created. This menu needs to be easy to use and
easy to modify.
I prefer shell scripts. In dos I used batch files. Other suggestions are
welcome. Something already internationalised would be good.
I suggest two menus. Think text/graphics or minimum_config/16M
config. Call them "text only menu" and "text and graphics menu" .
Say we can install rule on an 8 Meg 486. Then all apps in the text
only menu should be text and should be tested to perform
adequately on that type of system. The menus will have to run well
on this system too.
However even systems with pentiums and 16 Meg of ram or more will
benefit from a rule install. These systems will run a graphical browser
and other more powerful apps. Rule should install these programs
and make them available on another menu. This is the text and
graphics menu. Even on these systems text apps will be preferred for
some applications.
Both menus should be installed on every machine. For instance, I
might type m1 and get the text only menu, m2 and get the text and
graphics menu. Some programs will probably be on both menus.
Users of high powered machines may prefer some selections from
the text only menu. Users should be easily able to customize or
create new menus.
I also suggest that we list apps that have been tested to run well on
a rule system even if those apps are not selected as part of the
install. Otherwise users will be picking from the red hat rpms many of
which will no way run well even on a 16M system.
What do you think?
Thanks,
Hairy Larry
