Bingo, Michael. In my ignorance (and inclination to cut whatever I think can
be cut) I had not installed ssh. I considered ssh to be only for security and
as I thought this will only be a simple cd server I will do without. Apart
from your teaching me about ssh and its usefulness, perhaps this is another
example of the need to guide would-be users of what to install and what to
skip (as has already been amply stated by many others on this list of course!)
