I just did a bit of reading on qlogin:

and it sounds interesting. seems as though on a
single user machine, one could boot right into an
X-windows (or bash) session from lilo. Actually, since lilo
can do passwords, even multiuser machines could.
Certainly could reduce the time between switching on
the power and doing something.
(My yardstick for boot speed is the commodore 64.)
