I changed the plan a little bit: I did NOT install a Standard-RedHat but
I replaced the videoadapter with an other model - and now the surprise 
(after I did a new Slinky 0.3.9.-install with formating the partions):
Exactly the same result after typing startx and the same "crippeled"
output with "Xvesa -listmodes"! really very strange ...

I do now the RedHat standard install and we will see ...

PS Also changing the PCI-slot of the videoadapter and loading the
BIOS-Defaults did not solve the problem.
