[Rule-list] Which fonts are we talking about?

Hello,

On to confess my ignorance on these topics: with respect to the "font
server, and use less fonts" thread, which fonts are we talking about?
only those one sees in terminals , vi/emacs and WM menus? And
browsers? are they in or out of this count? What about printing? Say I
have little RAM but relatively much disk space: OK for seeing only two
fonts on screen, but I'd like anyway to *print* in many different
fonts. 

How are all these sides of the "font" thing related? How do you think
we should keep synchronized in RULE (if we should, of course)
