Jeff,
See comments interspersed below. I am assuming that you are using
slinky-v0.3.96.

The order of operations here is not quite right, from my experience.
Try it like this:

10. /mnt/floppy/setup_pcmcia.sh
11. nano -w /scripts/init_network.sh - Edited network variables,
removed extra HOSTx's
12. CTRL-O, Enter, CTRL-X to save and exit
13. /scripts/pcmcia.sh start ********see notes below *********
14. umount /mnt/floppy
15. Start the installation by entering the command:

/scripts/setup.sh

*******notes*******

After step 13, cardmgr may fail to find a module for your NIC. Watch
the error messages carefully (they are a bit redundant, unfortunately,
and sometimes indicate errors that do not actually exist). From them
you should be able to tell the name of the module that it is looking
for. Issue this command:

lsmod

to see if the module actually got inserted. If it is not listed, do this:

ls /mnt/floppy/modules/pcmcia

1. If the module is there, try to mount it manually with

modprobe your-nic.o

If that does not work, report back here with the errors!

2. If the desired module is not listed, we need to get it and add it to
the floppy. All of the network drivers for Michael's 2.4.18-4RULE
kernel are here:

http://www.tuxfan.homeip.net:8080/rule/slinky/2.4.18-4RULE/kernel/drivers/net/

Download the driver to a Linux-based PC. I do not think the driver can
be added to the pcmcia.img diskette under windows (maybe using something
like Cygwin? I have not tried...). Under linux, insert the diskette
into your floppy drive, and assuming that you have a directory such as
/mnt/floppy on the linux PC, do this:

mount /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy
cp your-nic.o /mnt/floppy/modules/pcmcia
umount /mnt/floppy

Then try again...let us know what happens!

3. BTW, if you do not have access to a Linux PC, let me know and I will
build you a pcmcia.img file and email it to you.

> And this is as far as I get. If I try to do "pcmcia.sh start" with the PCMCIA disk mounted, it fails looking for stuff from DISK2. If I mount DISK2 and run it, it fails because stuff from PCMCIA isn't present. I'm sure I've missed something that is obvious to someone else. But the install guide has been no help at all so far. Section 10.6 is certainly no help, since it tells nothing about PCMCIA. Scrounging around the installation reports so far hasn't yielded anything useful to my situation, but it is hard to tell which I should look at, since there is no distinction between laptops and desktops. So, I appeal to the list. Can anybody give me a hand?

I think that is closer, but on this machine the PCMCIA nic is recognized by cardmgr as an ne2000 card, but I couldn't find an ne2.o anywhere.
