[RULE] SPIP 1.8.1 can't connect to RULE database

AS mentioned in the other message, I spoke too early :-(
I have already sent the message below to the spip developers list, but
any comment and suggestion are obviously appreciated.
...Then I went to http://www.rule-project.org/ecrire/ to start setup.
Now in http://www.rule-project.org/ecrire/install.php3, above the
usual fields to enter database login and password, I read:
###################################################################
Publication system installation ...
Attention !
L'installation va probablement échouer, ou aboutir à un site non
fonctionnel...
# SPIP exige l'extension php MYSQL
###################################################################
When I enter database and password and hit continue I get:
####################################################################
Publication system installation ...
Second step: Attempting to connect to database--
Fatal error: Call to undefined function: mysql_connect() in
/home/ruleproj/public_html/ecrire/install.php3 on line 419
####################################################################
The PHP configuration can be read at
http://www.rule-project.org/phpcheck.php
Now, I'm sure there are other LAMP websites on that same server, so
what can it be this time? Can I make SPIP see the php mysql extension
(if that is the problem)? What else can I do?
TIA,
Marco
